James Madison Carpenter and Alan Lomax

The Aberdeenshire recordings made by these two important American folksong collectors are fully available on line. Both of them recorded many hours of song all around Scotland, so the online archives are large. We give you just a taste or two.

Alan Lomax recorded in Scotland in 1951. He had rich pickings in Aberdeenshire, and later in the 50s he took three Aberdeenshire singers, Jeannie Robertson, Jimmy MacBeath and Davie Stewart, down to London and recorded hours of song and interview.

James Madison Carpenter recorded in Scotland in 1931 and found a fine harvest in Aberdeenshire. Links on the right for some tracks, but beware, his recordings were made on a primitive machine!
